HISTORY

  • Grinkle Park Hotel is a large detached hotel set within its own grounds and located outside the settlement of Easington in the North York Moors National Park. 
  • The Hotel is approached via a long driveway surrounded by woodland and agricultural land totalling some 3,000 acres and is recognised as being part of one of the major shooting estates in the north of England. 
  • The former country house became a hotel in 1947 with particular emphasis on shooting and wedding parties.  
  • The Hotel represents one of the major sources of serviced accommodation in the National Park. The existing hotel, whilst having some recent additions, was in need of some updating and it is important that it remains a viable business at the upper end of the tourism market, there being few other similar facilities in the National Park. 

APPROACH

  • Northern Trust submitted a planning application to extend the property to accommodate a further 32 bedrooms together with an extension to the existing car park and internal access. 
  • Whilst this application was for a hotel extension, it formed part of a wider scheme being discussed with Local Authority to convert or refurbish a number of areas within close proximity to the Hotel to create further hotel facilities.  
  • The proposals include the creation of units of accomodation for guests within the walled garden (which is currently a derelict static caravan site), the refurbishment of some staff accommodation, the erection of a new spa facility and also the conversion of a Grade II Listed stable block from staff accommodation and storage to additional conference facilities.           
  • Northern Trust has proactively acquired further land in the area to expand the leisure provision of the hotel.                                                   

STATUS

  • Planning consent was granted for the construction of a 32 bedroom extension, extension to existing car park and internal site access. 
  • Planning consent was granted, subject to finalising a S106 agreement, for the erection of 31 self catering cottages including 32 car park spaces and an access road within the walled garden.
  • Planning consent was granted for the conversion of the former manager's house to a Hotel Spa.
  • Northern Trust have entered into detailed consultation with the Local Authority regarding the wider masterplan for the site including other tourist uses.
